About Tanjung Puting National Park

Tanjung Puting National Park is a protected conservation area established to safeguard orangutans and other wildlife species in their natural habitat. Covering approximately 414,040 hectares, the park represents one of the most significant lowland rainforest ecosystems in Indonesia.

To ensure conservation and sustainable use, the park is divided into three management zones:

  • Core Zone – strictly protected conservation area
  • Research Zone – designated for scientific and educational activities
  • Utilization Zone – allocated for controlled tourism activities

Visitors to Tanjung Puting National Park can experience diverse lowland tropical rainforest landscapes, rich in biodiversity and ecological importance.

Main Visitor Sites

There are three primary sites commonly visited within the park:

  1. Tanjung Harapan : Approximately 1.5 hours from Kumai by kelotok (motorized wooden boat).
  2. Pondok Tanggui : Approximately 2.5 hours from Kumai by kelotok.
  3. Camp Leakey : The oldest orangutan conservation and rehabilitation center, located about 4.5 hours from Kumai by motorized boat.

Kumai Port – Gateway to the Park

Kumai is the main access point to Tanjung Puting National Park. All entrance permits are processed here. The town is equipped with a tourist jetty and a visitor information center. For conservation and safety reasons, all visitors are required to be accompanied by a licensed local guide. Guides provide interpretation about the park while ensuring visitor safety and adherence to park regulations.
