History
The forest area of Gunung Palung was first protected in 1937 as a Nature Reserve covering approximately 300 km². In 1981, the protected area was expanded to 900 km² and its status was upgraded to a Wildlife Sanctuary. Later, on March 24, 1990, based on the Decree of the Minister of Forestry No. 448/Menhut-VI/1990, the area officially became Gunung Palung National Park with a total area of approximately 90,000 hectares.
On June 10, 2014, through Decree No. 4191/Menhut-VII/KUH/2014, the national park was further expanded to 108,043.90 hectares. The park stretches across several districts including Matan Hilir Utara, Sukadana, Simpang Hilir, Nanga Tayap, and Sandai.
Gunung Palung National Park (TNGP) is known for having one of the most complete ecosystems among Indonesia’s national parks. Inside the park stands Mount Palung with an elevation of 1,116 meters above sea level. The park is also home to approximately 2,500 orangutans.
Besides orangutans, TNGP is inhabited by various wildlife species, including proboscis monkeys, which are among the most common mammals found in the area. The park is also home to rare endemic fauna such as the Lesser Mouse Deer.
Since 2003, local communities surrounding Gunung Palung National Park have actively participated in protecting orangutans and their habitat through a community-based initiative called OPMU (Orangutan Protection & Monitoring Unit). Their conservation activities have attracted international attention and support from Fauna & Flora International (FFI), a conservation organization based in the United Kingdom.
